What actually happens in a chemistry meeting?

What is a coaching chemistry meeting, why are they important and what to expect? Here you will find some top tips on how to make the most of them.

It’s a question I get asked a lot as a coach and it’s a great one.

A chemistry meeting is in an initial, informal conversation between a coach and coffee designed to explore compatibility, build rapport and align expectations. It can take place face-to-face, virtually or over the phone, depending on your circumstances and the way in which the coach works.  Understanding the purpose and potential of the meeting sets a good foundation for your coaching journey.

Chemistry meetings are the first step in building a coaching relationship. These informal, exploratory conversations are designed to help both coach and coachee figure out if they’re a good fit. It’s not about impressing each other or committing on the spot. It’s about connection, clarity, and choice.

These meetings, sometimes called discovery sessions, help to:

Avoid mismatches: They help ensure that both coach and coachee are aligned in terms of expectations, communication style, and coaching approach.

Establish mutual understanding: By sharing backgrounds and experiences, both parties gain insight into each other’s perspectives.

Clarify goals: Coachees can articulate what they hope to achieve, helping coaches tailor their support effectively.

Set boundaries and expectations: Topics like confidentiality, session frequency, and communication preferences are discussed to create a safe and structured environment.

You may not cover some of these elements in detail, but they should be touched on. Once you agree to move forward with a specific coach, expect to discuss points around goals, boundaries and expectations to be covered in your first formal session.

As a coach, I see this meeting as a two-way street. I want to understand what’s brought someone to coaching, what they’re hoping to achieve, and how they like to work. Equally, I want them to get a feel for my style, ask questions, and reflect on whether I’m the right person to support them.

Coaching is personal. The dynamic matters. A chemistry meeting is an opportunity to establish a professional connection that supports growth, challenge and development. Sometimes the best coach for you isn’t the one you click with instantly. It’s the one who challenges you, stretches you, and helps you grow. That’s why chemistry meetings exist: to explore that potential before you commit.

If you ever feel unsure after a chemistry meeting, that’s okay too. We won’t be offended. We want you to find the coach who’s the best fit for your journey, even if that’s not us.

So, if you’re about to have your first chemistry meeting, here’s my advice:

  • Reflect on what you need.
  • Be open and honest.
  • Ask questions.
  • Trust your instincts.

It’s the start of something powerful. And it’s yours to shape.

I use it as a chance to reminisce about my undergraduate days and the difference between organic/inorganic and physical chemistry….

Boom tish!

(just done a few in the last few weeks, and it’s mainly been a chance to get clarity on the process and expectations on both sides. Also just the chance to go from being a bio on a coaching page or database into a person and get to know each other and see if you’re comfy to work together)

Nice! I did wonder if you’d say something similar.

I enjoy the chemistry meeting. I have a few over the next week and it’s always a good opportunity to explore things – an email can only say so much. Plus I’m naturally curious and enjoy hearing about other people, places and ways of thinking.
