There’s a big difference between being good at something and being energised by it.
It took me a long time to learn that. In every chapter of my squiggly career, I’ve been at my best when I’m helping others find clarity, creating light-touch structure, or reframing what looks like a problem into possibility.
That’s not coincidence. That’s values and energy, in action.
It’s why I love coaching—it gives me energy even on the tired days. And it’s why coaching and leadership, not just delivery or technical know-how, has become my true focus. So how do you figure out what energises you? And how can you build more of that in?
I thought I’d share some of what’s helped me and the people I coach:
1. Track your energy, not just your time.
At the end of the week, ask yourself: What gave me energy? What drained it?
Use a simple green–amber–red system or a journal. Over time, patterns emerge. These aren’t just preferences—they’re clues to your strengths and values.
2. Understand the why
The things that energise you often reflect your values. For me, it’s curiosity, clarity, connection, creativity. When those show up, I light up.
Ask: What need is being met when I feel energised?
3. Don’t just manage energy—design for it
Build more of what fuels you into your week. That might mean:
- Starting your day with your favourite type of work
- Blocking “focus” slots when your energy is highest
- Choosing projects that align with your values—even if they stretch you
It’s a bit like spoon theory: if you have a limited number of “spoons” each day, spend them where they count. And if something gives you a spoon? That’s gold.
4. As a leader: create energy-conscious teams
Great leadership isn’t just about performance—it’s about sustainable performance.
You can:
- Check in not just on output, but on energy
- Help people understand and use their strengths
- Make space for flexibility and recovery
- Value neurodivergent ways of working and processing
Because when people feel safe and seen, they bring their best.
Remember, doing what gives you energy isn’t selfish. It’s smart, sustainable, and deeply strategic. And it’s how you unlock performance—not just for yourself, but for your team.
So tell me, what gives you energy? And how can you do more of it?
